We’ve received another story from a fan in Germany via facebook. This is really exciting. It is written in English so everybody can read it. Thank you so much, Armin!

However, I am still unsure how facebook works and I have to admit, I am very worried about privacy issues and all that. I am also not sure how to link from facebook back to the blog. The other way round works well for me :)

So I decided to copy Armin’s story to the blog here.

The Northern Hemisphere is moving into spring and it is very clear everybody is craving for more balmy, sunny days.  The healing power of the sun is just so amazing, isn’t it?

Here is the story:

alien competition

Alien tries to catch this big red star falling down into her hands. It’s spring on earth and everybody is looking up to the sky. This clear and wide open sky. Looks like heaven. Most people are looking for this near and at once far star called sun. Our yellow star. In spring this sun shows all her power. Suddenly the days become longer. And man and woman are excited. And the plants also spring.
A long time they had to live without light and delight. And many people were made insecure, if sun would ever come back. One day at a time it was dark and dull. And everybody became more and more tired. Some fall in depression.
But since yesterday all the dark clouds had left the sky and our mind. We feel good and lucky. We feel strong and so brave, that we would like to make this great world a better place.
So it will be, and nothing will stop us on our way to this bright future. Let’s work together. Nobody should stay alone. We will live together in love and peace under our helpful and supporting sun.
And Alien will catch a second sun for us just to make our live greater.

robe

Yesterday was the day. The first anniversary of my blog. Unfortunately the protagonists were missing. What a sad situation. I couldn’t really celebrate, could I? Not without my Dedes?

I have to admit, when they went into their strategy meeting I was shocked to hear I wasn’t invited. My initial thought was I must convince them they really need me. But being forced to step away from my Dedes and keeping myself busy with other stuff I had neglected for some time, I realised they need to explore their own ways. In the end they will figure out they need me more than I need them.

Do they really think they can do away with their artist? I am quietly confident I know the answer.

Let’s face it, it is a power game. One day they are scared of a looming end because I don’t look after them well enough. The next day they feel so confident and cocky about their own ability. Convincing themselves they could do a much better job than me and they should do  away with me altogether.

I wish I wouldn’t get involved in their little games, but I am not super-human. For some reason or another I always end up in the thick of it.

I am not sure what happened, but last night when I came home from sports the door to their meeting room was flung wide open, light still blazing, and no Dede to be seen. I looked in all their usual hang-outs, but the only thing I could find was a discarded robe. They must have left in a hurry.

I know by now they have a habit of leaving in a huff, but they always come back.

While I am waiting, I want to remind our readers that our story-telling competition is still on until 4th March. I called it a competition for lack of a better word and because you can win a Dede book or postcards. Alien still wants to have a new background story :)

devil thinking

It was such a great evening yesterday. Really, it was wonderful to see the Dedes  having fun together again. We have come such a long way, haven’t we?  Mouse reminded us that our first anniversary of blogging is coming up soon. I had forgotten when we started, as for me it is such a normal part of my daily routine now. So I had to check whether Mouse is correct and indeed, I published my first post ever on the 27th of Feb last year. So it is ten days to go before the first year ends. Anniversaries are such wonderful occasions to stop and reflect about what you are doing, aren’t they?

When the puppets were still asleep this morning, I indulged in re-reading some of the stuff. I can truly say, the whole blogging process is a very interesting experience. The blog has changed considerably throughout the year . In the beginning I wrote much more about the background and processes around the puppets, rather than what the puppets are experiencing in their daily life. It started off with the publishing process of  the puppet book “Hermit’s Web”, then I had a period where I posted my other artwork, before I finally settled into the continuing puppet story.

The Dedes said last night they really would love to celebrate the anniversary in style. They want to have another competition of some sort. I agreed but put the ball back in their court. They can’t expect me to have all the ideas, so I left it to them to come up with a feasible concept. But I will be happy to donate a set of postcards as a prize again.

Nobody was forthcoming with any ideas yesterday. Devil thought hard for a while and finally said maybe our readers have a wish or idea? The Dedes would be delighted to hear your suggestions for how we should celebrate this remarkable milestone!

Sadly, all good things have to come to an end at some stage. And so Miss Viwi has posted her last article about the Dedes yesterday. Everybody was a bit sad. After all, they had enjoyed the attention tremendeously. Witch was so kind to translate the last part.

Two women, two continents, two blogs, twelve hours time difference and around 40 dede puppets –  One common project. Exciting weeks in |:::VEGGIETORIA:::| and likewise in the Dede World.

I want to express my heartfelt thanks to Dietlind Wagner for the wonderful collaboration, the book, the interview and the visits to  |:::VEGGIETORIA:::|. Thankyou to L’Artiste for the visit and the interview, Mouse and German Girl for the translations, and Foreign Correspondent for the summary of the Dede stories on the German blog.

Thanks also to the other Dedes who are reading my blog and their great understanding.

A big thankyou goes to all the readers for their attention, the clicking of the Like button and for the lovely comments they left.

witch cooking

Witch cooking.

I had one last question: How do you like it at |:::VEGGIETORIA:::|? and L’Artiste answered: “I love how miss viwi conveys her point of view convincingly and that she reminds us of what’s wrong with the world we live in.”
Dietlind Wagner agreed with what L’Artiste said and added: ”It is a lovely blog to rummage in when you are interested in nutrition and animal rights.
At this point Witch piped up: “I totally agree with miss viwi, one can live happily and healthyly without meat”.

Unfortunately many of the Dede puppets are directly or indirectly affected by exploitation through humans.
For product testing, animals like Mouse, Cat, Monkey, Harvey and Lou are favoured, while Pig, Ducky and Cash Cow find themselves on the daily menu of many people.
Foxy Lady’s fellows are painfully killed to be applied to jackets, caps, scarfs and other items.
Even if these words will cause the Dede’s to have nightmares, it is the reality. Only us humans, consumers, producers can make the change!

The exploitation/torture/killing/eating/wearing etc of animals has nothing to do with pleasure/fashion/science. It is based on ignorance –  wilful or negligent and/or greed.

“Who understands and does not act has not understood.” Laotse

I send my love to New Zealand!!! Thanks!!!

There was silence for a while, not even Smuggy, usually the first one to make a comment, dared to say anything.

“I felt like crying throughout the entire article” Mouse said finally. “First for all the heartfelt thankyous –That was so lovely! But then tears of powerlessness welled up. I don’t know about you guys, but I certainly will have nightmares for a while.”

I told them we should leave it at this and let the readers think about it. I just wanted to add a big Thankyou to Miss Viwi as well. It was a great project and I wish her the very best for all her future projects! The Dedes all nodded, but didn’t cheer as loudly as they usually do. They still had pictures of their tortured mates in their minds.

harvey smuggy

Remember the gambling rabbit, Harvey, who cheated his way into the Super Dede competition before Christmas? He made himself scarce after he realised he offended a few too many Dedes, in particular the female ones.  The ladies were really upset about his behaviour. One of them, I think it was Foxy Lady, said they should have left him in the 1970’s, the way he talks! She certainly wouldn’t touch him with a barge pole.

Now he is back!

And by Dede he has changed! He has got quieter. Gone is the hyper-activity and loudness. The Dedes were stunned and wanted to know where he was and how he’d fared. He told them he had dug himself a burrow on the hilltop and watched the sun rise and set each day. He knows now the way he treated women was totally wrong. If he had continued like that a serious relationship would remain a pipe dream. And he can reveal it now, this was his New Year’s resolution… he desperately wanted to find a partner.

One day, when he was down, he poured his heart out to Philosopher. No woman, at least none of the marrying kind, wanted to stick with him. Philosopher suggested he should go into recluse for a while and ponder about the importance of life. Because if he wanted something so badly, but couldn’t get it, his approach must be wrong.

“And?” Mouse, the little gossip asked outright, “how is the love-life then?”

“Great!” Harvey rejoiced. “I found my princess!”

“Who is it?” “Do we know her?” “What does she do?” Everybody wanted to know more.

“No, you don’t know her, she just moved here. Her name is Pavlova…”

“Oh, don’t tell me!” Smuggy said deprecatingly. “She is not one of those, is she?”

“What do you mean?” Harvey walked up close to him and looked him in the eye “I recommend you too should sit on a mountain top for a while. It would do you a world of good. Honestly, you don’t even know her. Only because she has a foreign name doesn’t mean she is one of … as you call it… those! I forbid you to talk about my fiancee like this!”

There was a noticeable silence. Mouse and Foxy Lady looked at each other –  this was indeed a novelty… Harvey defending the reputation of a girl. They knew there and then, that she really must be someone very special.

detail and Chance

Minor asked her aunty Chance to meet with her. Chance is the half-sister of Detail.  It is sad to see, but there is not much love lost between them. The two sisters couldn’t be more different. It’s a classic case of personality clash. Detail, the older one, is certainly the more serious of the two. She takes everything and everybody at face-value and has to ponder about even the most minute aspect of an issue before she can make up her mind. She sees hurdles and stumbling blocks everywhere she goes. She wants to be loved by everybody and is a brilliant listener. When any of her friends have a problem, they love to talk to her, as she really takes the time to get into it and always wants to know every tiny little facet.

Chance is not dissimilar in the way that she takes everybody at face-value, but she doesn’t suffer fools gladly. She is a happy-go-lucky kind of gal. Her approach to life  is “if you don’t like me, it is your problem not mine” and leaves people to it. She never ever tries to convince others that she is right and she readily walks away from situations. Nothing is a big deal for her. If something doesn’t work out, she takes a crack at something else. This doesn’t mean she has no stamina, quite the contrary, but she simply knows when she has tried long enough –  she is so sure of herself.

A big bone of contention between the two is Minor. When Detail found out she was pregnant, she had to virtually grow up over night and take responsibility. Chance doesn’t have kids of her own and never settled down. And despite her being very difficult to grab hold of, and only swoons in and out of Minor’s life, the girl adores her like an absent father. Whenever she has big problems with Mum, she calls on her aunty. This fact hurts Detail a lot, but she would never admit to it openly.

With the going-ons lately Minor had to call her aunt for help and Chance promised to come round as soon as she has a spare moment, probably tomorrow.

minor and detail

Detail is at sixes and sevens at the moment, and this is a state she can’t cope with. She needs to be in control. Outwardly nothing much has changed between the two of them. When they are out shopping together, Minor follows her mother with a sour-face and when they bump into acquaintances, she waits patiently until Detail has exchanged the latest news. This is a feat on its own as Detail is as sweet as ever and interested in other people. She always wants to know more and her conversations are never short.

But when they are at home, we hear plenty of screaming matches with high pitched voices, followed by prolonged silences. It must be clear – even for the most dull-witted of the Dedes – that something is going on.

I asked Detail what Philosopher said to her on Saturday, very dispirited she replied: “Pretty much the same thing as ArtistatExit0 said in his comment to the post. In a nutshell, they think making mistakes is a necessary, yet painful, part of the learning process. There is absolutely nothing I can do about it, except to be there when Minor needs me. But why can’t she learn from my experience?”

And then she went on to tell me how much she sacrificed for the girl, she always wanted the best for her and what a lovely girl she was when she was little, then she always listened. Now as a mother, she could throttle this Rob, Minor calls her b o y f r i e n d, he must have seduced her daughter, even drugged her, why else wouldn’t she  listen anymore. Wouldn’t you think, she would know by now that her mother always knows best…

It was a barrage of words, unedited and difficult to make sense of.

“I just can’t take this anymore” she said to me in tears. “I don’t want her to make the same silly mistakes I did. I wish I had listened to my mother!”

“If you had listened to your mother” I said, “you wouldn’t have this beautiful daughter of yours! Would you?”

mouse deutsch fraulein

Mouse has finally recovered and rejoined us yesterday. She certainly didn’t want to miss Miss Viwi’s third installment about the background of the Dede puppets. But has she learned from her breakdown? No!

Deutsch Fraulein volunteered to do the translation this time. She believes she isn’t featured enough on the blog. Mouse, however, doesn’t think much of Deutsch Fraulein’s skills. In the end they tried to work together and were nearly finished, when they started to quarrel over who is driving the computer mouse. One of them, I don’t know who, accidentally clicked the ‘Publish’ button before the translation was finished… So if you got a partially finished post in your inbox, I apologise. After that, both of them lost interest and I was left to finish the translation of Miss Viwi’s work this morning. So, here is… (And you will find the German original here)

It is amazing how time flies. This is already the third part of the fascinating interview series with Dietlind Wagner.

miss viwi: Why do the Dede’s have bodies in the film, but not in the exhibition?

dietlind:the puppets were conceived as ‘Nobodies’, which of course is ambiguous, like so many other aspects of the work.

On the one hand it is a comment that everything happens in one’s head. (This has something to do with my experience in digital. For years I have mainly worked digitally. Only when I took up painting in acrylic again, did I realise how much I missed the the haptic and physical in my work.)

On the other hand a  „Nobody“ is also an non-entity.
Everybody is in some respect a nobody“.

miss viwi: Can one interpret it in such a way that the puppets are living subjects in the film, while in an exhibition they are objects created by you?

dietlind:Yes, that is pretty much how it is.

In the book the puppets have digitally added bodies. I realised that body language is absolutely necessary to tell a story, even if it is only expressed by a very simple body.
Later the Dedes got their black robes, as contrast to their colourful heads.

In an exhibition I want the viewers to engage closely with the collages. They hint at a character’s traits. Foxy Lady, for example, has a map on the back of her head, indicating she is a roamer. Devil’s Advocate is a man of words and has a scrabble board.

The collages are too detailed to come out in photographs, but the puppets can be easily distinguished.

In story-telling the additional expression of the body is absolutely necessary, as the facial expressions are as good as non-existent. I say as good as: it is in fact possible to tease out slightly different expressions by changing the camera angle.”

The dedepuppets are artworks that function on multiple levels: as photographs, sculptures, video, illustrations and literature.

miss viwi: Where exactly does the subjectifying of objects take place and vice versa, the objectifying of subjects?

dietlind:This is a very good question.
It happens in the mind of the viewer. Everyone interprets their surroundings with their own knowledge and values.
In my opinion it is impossible to communicate with another subject completely and unambiguously. Every communication is ultimately a reflection on the ‘self’.

When I view my cat as my baby, I will interpret her reactions to me as that of a baby. Does the cat behave like a baby? No, she behaves like a cat, it is me who sees what I want to see!
Of course I need to know how a baby reacts to actually see it in my cat.

When I tell the story, that Nosy Neighbour complains about the party noise at night, everybody who has experienced a similar complaint will see in  Nosy Neighbour their neigbour, not mine.”

miss viwi: Do you have a puppet you don’t like?

dietlind:Two-faced is a puppet I visually dislike. She has one laughing face and one in which she rolls her eyes. She irritates me.

All the other puppets have some character traits I dislike, but at the same time they have lovely traits and it balances itself out. One exception is Harvey, the gambling rabbit. I try to understand him, but somehow it doesn’t seem to work. In real live a Harvey would have a lot of trouble with me. And Smug Little Devil is getting up my nose as well.”

miss viwi: How much Dietlind-personality is in the individual puppet personalities?

dietlind:Plenty, but none is undilutedly Dietlind. I have friends who have read the book and could see themselves in every single character. That shows that they are only general observations. None of the characters are based on a particular person.”

miss viwi: What do you mean by Parallel Universe?

dietlind:Like in real life, but not real.
The term ‘Parallel Universe’ was taking the mickey on current culture on TV. I think that is certainly no different in Austria than in New Zealand, parallel universes are in.

The Dedes have an absolutely non-thrilling life, just like most people: no murder, no killings, no sex in public but they still tell their stories and life goes on…”

miss viwi: Does the creation of art always happen in a parallel universe?

dietlind: “I can’t answer this question for everybody. For me personally the creation definitely takes place in a different sphere. I wouldn’t call it a parallel universe, though.”

Mouse was initially angry with Dietlind when she found out about the interview, but the resentment has since vanished. Mouse was the first to check out the interview two weeks ago… as soon as it was published. Her approving final words were: “Miss Viwi has done a wonderful job and I am certainly looking forward to next week.” They filled Miss Viwi with great pride.

Miss Viwi is excited to have won Mouse over and comments: “Can there be anything more wonderful than writing about Art and subsequently receive praise from the artwork itself.”

Miss Viwi also sent Mouse her the best wishes for a speedy recovery!

Next Sunday, 27th Jan 2013  |:::VEGGIETORIA:::| is expecting an additional special guest

http://veggietoria.files.wordpress.com/2013/01/l_artiste-and-triptych_thumb2.jpgL’Artiste Dede
{L’artiste dede, here with a triptych by Dietlind Wagner, Where am I?, Acrylic on canvas, 2012.}

Together with Dietlind Wagner he will answer questions about art and its function, and also some  personal ones.

See you next week, same time, same place, new guests, new questions.

Miss Viwi and Dietlind are happy about any comments on the series. You can leave a comment in German on Miss Viwi’s blog or email her veggietoria@live.at. You can also leave a comment on this blog here.

fc and mouse

It’s all happening at the moment. First of all, the problem we had with the blog images seems to have dissolved into thin air. Yesterday morning, Mouse was close to a nervous break-down after she had spent almost the whole night on the computer trying to solve the problem together with Foreign Correspondent. You know how it is. When there is a technical issue, you really want to nail it, don’t you! When the posted image still didn’t show up in the Reader yesterday, she was hyperventilating. I was worried she might have a heart attack. Finally, she threw her hands in air and admitted defeat.

However, by lunch time she checked the blogs she is following in the Reader and she couldn’t believe her eyes. There they were, the Dede blog images. All of them. The two from yesterday, the day before, even last weeks. So, remind me again, what was the problem? It seems to have been a WordPress glitch and Mouse and Foreign Correspondent now believe it might have something to do with the size of the original images. The images I give them to put up are sized to fit into the width of our blog column, not  a single pixel larger, and WordPress obviously makes them even smaller to display in the Reader.

They told everybody what they had figured out, but the Dedes weren’t interested in the detail. They were just pleased that it finally seems to work.

This gave Foreign Correspondent the confidence to put up his introductory post on the German Blog dedepuppetsde.wordpress.com. So it is all go now. “And we even have a follower already!” He was really chuffed when he reported back to us. “We also had a comment from Monika-Maria, congratulating me on my new job and what a great idea it is to have the German translation.” He could barely hide his pride.

Mouse was a bit touchy. “So what?” she said. “You are only rehashing what we do on our English blog. And if I hadn’t done all the hard work here for nearly a year, nobody would have looked at yours today.”  She tried to down-play his success. I was genuinely surprised by her reaction. I thought these two were getting on well, after their unexpected bonding exercise of trouble-shooting. Then it occurred to me there might be professional envy at play.

Mouse thrives on the admiration for her work and so far there has been absolutely no one who could hold a candle up to her. Then out of the blue Foreign Correspondent shows up and in next to nothing he gets something off the ground, no fussing at all. Uh, that must have hurt.

“And by the way,” Mouse continued with the snappy tone, “I have started on the Dede puppets fan page on facebook… We have been discussing it for so long. This is just ridiculous. I can’t wait until we all agree… I could wait until the cows come home!”

“So how is it going with this one?” Socialite pricked up her ears. She was always keen on a facebook page. “Not so well,” Mouse admitted quietly. “I shouldn’t have said anything yet. I have to get my head around this first. After all, I was very tired last night from all the trouble shooting the night before. So, please don’t look at it yet!”

her fault

I arrived back home late last night.  I didn’t take any of the Dedes with me on my holidays, as they accused me of favouritism as soon as I picked one of them up to pack into a box. So I left them all behind. This wasn’t a good move as it was raining non-stop where we were and a bit of hands-on puppetry would have gone down a treat. Never mind!

When I came home, all the lights were blazing. I tip-toed into the house to surprise the Dedes. It was a really bad idea as I overheard their discussion. They were sitting around on the living room floor lamenting about the poor participation in the poll.

Smug Little Devil said: “It is really her fault isn’t it? She should not have gone away in the hot phase of voting.”

“Why, what could she have done?” Socialite asked.

“Don’t you know the old saying ‘out of sight out of mind’!” Smug Little Devil replied. “She should have reminded our readers throughout week that they should vote!”

“But she was somewhere with no internet connection and anyway… maybe we only have nine readers?” Foxy Lady pointed out. “No way” Mouse butted in, “we have way more than that…”

“You know how to use the computer” Socialite turned to Mouse now. “You could have reminded the readers!”

“I am not doing anything without being given a mandate. She didn’t instruct me to send out reminders.”

“So we are back to what I said… It is all her fault, isn’t it?” Smug Little Devil pointed out with his unpleasant smirk on his face.

“Give her a break” Philosopher entered the conversation “She is allowed to have a break from us from time to time… She has put so much work into us all year… Where would we be without her?” Tears welled up in my eyes when I heard this nice remark and I was about to enter the room and hug Philosopher, when Smug Little Devil countered Philosopher’s words: “That point of view is futile really… you might as well say where would we be if we had a more driven Master? I believe we could be out there known by heaps more people. We could go travelling and could have a new exhibition somewhere every month. You can’t convince me that she is best for us!”

This made me turn on my heals and leave the house again, so I could come back making a  big racket this time, announcing my arrival to even the deafest of puppets. They all came running out of the living room towards the back door and shouted “We are so happy to have you back.” Leading the pack was none other then Smug Little Devil. I won’t tell you what I thought…

We are very close to the big finale: the winner of the ‘Super Dede 2012’ competition will be announced tomorrow! If you haven’t voted yet, here is the poll again. When I checked last, Mouse was leading. To read a summary of their performances, have a look at the previous post.
