Every time I have a moment I try to clear out a box or two. This morning I moved one to the side and nearly dropped it when I suddenly saw L’Artiste sitting there scribbling on a piece of paper. “What are you doing up so early and hiding behind a box?”

L’Artiste was equally surprised and quickly responded “Nothing!” He tried to look unsuspicious but he couldn’t hide the paper as he was sitting on it and I could see what he’d already written. It said “L’Artiste’s CV”, though the rest was blank.

“What’s that all about?” I asked him.

“I have had enough of waiting around. I want a job” he admitted and added meekly  “and I am going to find it elsewhere since you don’t seem to be making any progress here.” He looked at me in anticipation of my response. I have to admit, I was taken aback. We are so close to getting cracking again. Why are the Dedes all of a sudden getting so impatient with me. I don’t have the energy to fight it and all I asked was what kind of job he is looking for.

“Don’t know. Anything really” he told me.

“What are your marketable skills then?”

“Don’t know… I am creative! I am pretty sure I’ll find something.”

I wasn’t sure what to say. Good on him for trying. It is definitely better than sitting around, but personally I was very disappointed that he didn’t have the stamina to wait just a tad longer.

“Best of luck” I said and continued clearing boxes. That left him speechless.

devil balustrade

When Devil saw Monkey sliding down the banister yesterday he of course wanted to have a go as well. You certainly can imagine how much noise these two guys made and I wasn’t impressed at all. I am trying to work here! They really have to keep the noise down a little. When I first asked them to tone it down, they looked at each other and quieted down. But it didn’t take long before they were back to their old noisy selves. Personally, I got the impression Devil didn’t even enjoy himself that much. He looked rather miserable and scared. He looked as if he only put on a brave face because Monkey loved it so much. So I thought I’d help him out and asked them to stop. But boy, was I mistaken! Devil stood up to me and said he and Monkey will continue until I set all the Dedes free. Here we go again: Devil is trying to hold me to ransom.

I don’t have the time to play his silly games, so I just grabbed him next time he came down to the bottom of the stairs and wrestled him back into the box. He forgot I am still stronger than him!

monkey move

We have made the move, phew. All our business stuff has been shuffled into the new studio space. And that is it. We have just added to the big mess we already had in the house anyway. I don’t even know where to start tidying up. But mess and all, the space feels fantastic. This morning Monkey came sliding down the balustrade from upstairs and settled on the sideboard next to my desk. “So” he said to me “The move is over. Where are all the others then?”

“You can’t be serious” I responded, slightly annoyed.  “Look around. I can’t have all the Dedes running wild in this mess.”

“I am so sick of all your promises” he said indignantly. “Can I remind you, that you have an obligation to look after us. We are your artworks!”

“I know, I know. I feel really bad about it. But things are just so much slower in real life. But of course you wouldn’t know, you are not real!”

“It is not just about us! It is now three months since you told your real friends they would be invited to a Dede recital afternoon. And it still hasn’t happend! This is simply unacceptable by any standard.”

“Do you think I am happy with the progress?”

“C’mon, be brave! Just set a date! You know when you set a date it will happen.”

He jumped down from the sideboard and grabbed the computer mouse to open the calendar. “How does Saturday the 26th sound?”

“I don’t know if the bathroom will be painted by then.”

“Get real. Do you think your friends care? It’s only paint! They’ll be here to see us!”

I knew I had to give in to get him off my back. Otherwise I wouldn’t get any work done today.

rainy day

For weeks now I have been telling the Dedes that once we have moved into the new studio space we will do lots together. I sense they have given up on me! They think I am fobbing them off and they accuse me of not putting enough effort into finishing the space. In fact I am flat out. I call the new studio space the “America’s Cup room”. Every day I think we will be able to finish, we are so close, but then something unexpected happens. So, tomorrow will be the day, and if not tomorrow it will be the day after. It definitely has to happen this week as we have to move out of the rented office space by the end of the month. Here you have it – by the weekend we are moving and the new chapter will start!

Meanwhile, the Dedes are bored out of their minds. The world at this end has turned to spring, the magnolia blossom has been and gone. Yesterday we had a fantastic warm day. Today we have a horrible storm. Most of the Dedes are curled up in a box. Only Monkey hangs around. Now that they are not paying much attention, I can tell you guys that in fact heaps has happened in recent weeks. I am reluctant to tell the Dedes just yet. I don’t want them to get too excited. I know them. They will pester me to start on the new projects immediately but I really have to finish the studio space first. So, please, bear with me!

Little Piggy and Farmer John have left us for good. They found a new home over the weekend. You might recall, they wanted to stay at the Depot Artspace. Well, they weren’t left on the shelf for long. It feels strange not knowing where they went and it is a little sad that we will never hear from them again. So if the person who bought them comes across this blog, please, let us know how they are getting on.

lartiste mitzi tennisfilm

I had to go out last night and when I came back L’Artiste and Mitzi had finally left their spot on the yoga mat. They had made their way to the table and the lap top. Mitzi  had swapped one cosy place for another and was curled up on the keyboard, not too far from where L’Artiste was sitting. But L’Artiste had changed big time. He had a definite aura of action about him.  When I went round to see what he was doing he immediately said “So what is wrong with that?” and pointed to the screen. I could see the half finished tennis film. “We have a good amount of footage here. We could finish this one in no time flat!” he continued excitedly.

I had to own up that I wasn’t entirely happy with the script. I had asked a friend to come up with something. I don’t think I conveyed very well what I was after and unfortunately what we ended up with wasn’t in line with the Dede spirit. It wasn’t just a little off, it was way off. That is why I put it on hold.

L’Artiste scratched his head for a moment and then said “I really think we should finish it. I am sure your friend will understand when he sees the final product, don’t you think?”

“I promise I will look at the script again and see what I can salvage. It has been sitting in the drawer for a while now. Maybe it improved while it sat there.”

lartiste and mitzi

As Lil’Piggy and Farmer John decided to stay at the Depot Artspace, L’Artiste saw his chance for an outing. “Pick me, pick me” he called every time our paths crossed. “Artists need new impressions. You know this just as well as I do, don’t you?”  How could I say no, particularly as he is featured in the short film that is now showing on Waiheke.  I didn’t need to think twice about who I should take as his partner. I always knew I had to take two Dedes to give a good performance. As it happened, L’Artiste got himself a Lil’Dede cat recently, called Mitzi, and the two of them became inseparable very quickly. So Mitzi  was the second lucky one to come.

We started off in beautiful sunshine here, but by the time we arrived at the wharf a blanket of dark clouds covered the sky and we could see the rain coming down over our suburb in the distance. Pretty much all day we were just a little bit ahead of the weather. It was a pity because the threatening clouds seemed to keep people away and not much happened on the island. There was a busker in front of the gallery and L’Artiste danced his little heart out to the beautiful tunes, but he just couldn’t create much interest.

He was very quiet on the way home and when we finally arrived back, he didn’t want to come out of the rucksack.

monkey and lilpiggy

I needn’t have worried. Monkey has already found a new friend to confide in: Lil’Piggy.

Lil’Piggy and Farmer John eloped together and set up camp in one of my hoody pockets. They looked so settled that I let them stay. This morning when I came into the kitchen Monkey was sitting on the floor telling Lil’Piggy his life story. Farmer John sat on the kitchen bench and watched them from afar. He reckons Monkey is attracted to the Lil’Dedes because the other Dedes never tired of laughing at his antics and always called him a monkey.

monkeys

Well, I was wrong again. Last time I said the original Dedes and the Lil’Dedes didn’t want to know each other and they keep to their respective groups. Tomorrow the Lil’Dedes are leaving for Waiheke Island to be exhibited. When I started packing up you should have seen the monkeys. They didn’t want to let go of each other. Obviously they had forged a deep friendship in the few days they were together.  They asked me for 10 minutes of privacy so they could say good bye to each other.

I feel really nasty now, that I break them up.

sander-2

The Dedes are starting to run out of patience. They still haven’t moved into their new studio space. We are still busy sanding down window frames. I want to have the space perfect before I allow them to settle. Surprisingly, it was all good for a while. They seemed to be content as they could see the light at the end of the tunnel – or so I thought. I just assumed the Dedes know me well enough to sense how stressed I am and that it is not a good time to talk to me. I really appreciated that they gave me the space I needed and that they refrained from pushing me. But this morning it finally occured to me they don’t really understand that things take time. No! they have simply given up on me. All the projects that we’ve started came to a screeching halt. They have given up asking me about the tennis film and recording the Dada recitals and all the other fun things we had planned and were so excited about. Instead, they are terribly annoyed that I spend every spare minute making new Lil’Dedes for the upcoming exhibition. Needless to say, there is no love lost between the big ones and the little ones. The big ones keep to themselves and it is now very obvious that they are currently avoiding me!

This morning Devil and L’Artiste decided they couldn’t wait any longer and took action to speed things up. They went into the new space and had a good look at the sander. They discussed it, scratched their heads and figured out it will take at least two Dedes to shift the heavy thing. By the time they had dragged it to the window they were totally exhausted and needed a break. They still haven’t figured out how to switch the thing on. To be honest, I hope they never ever will…

lil devil in Berlin

I’ve got an email from Theresa with a brief report how Lil’Devil is doing. He is a bit shy and mainly sitting on her bookshelf reading books in English. Theresa says that with the speed he is churning through the books he will have to learn German soon so he can start on the German books. Learning German wouldn’t go amiss anyway. Otherwise he will have a hard time making friends. But then, most Germans speak pretty good English and are always happy to practise their language skills with a native speaker.

Last weekend they went to Gorinsee in the north-east of Berlin and I’ve been told he made quite an impression with his tiger-print dress.
