Today Lou, the puppy, and Skeleton Edeltraut braved the camera for the “Embrace Diversity” project. While their story is sort of a love story, they are nothing like Romeo and Juliet. It is really sad!

Lou, the puppy is eternally in love with Skeleton Edeltraut. Hands up who would blame him. Edeltraut, the fragile skeleton on the other hand is terribly scared. She believes he simply desires her lovely bones. Hands up who would blame her. Unfortunately Lou seeks her out and follows her everywhere if he has the chance. As soon as she opens the closet door he is there. This impacts on her livelihood tremendously. She is pretty much confined to the closet and hardly ventures out these days. This is certainly not what life is all about and the other Dedes are at a total loss about what to do. Help!

Today Mouse and Push Push, the elephant talk about their relationship for our “Embrace Diversity” series. There shouldn’t be any animosities between them, but poor Mouse has an irrational fear of elephants, simply because they are so huge. It is as irrational as having a fear of green mice.

Elephants are indeed vegetarians and truth be told, Mouse should be more afraid of Cool Cat or Foxy Lady. Surprisingly she isn’t!

Lucky for Push Push, she is the one elephant Mouse knows personally, so of course with her it different. It is simply, the better you know something or someone the least fear inducing they are.  Mouse still reckons Push Push is a klutz, though she would never tell her to her face and as a precaution keeps her at arm’s length. Funnily enough Push Push’s friends warn her about Mouse. They believe, the little rodent could get up the elephant’s very long nose. This is nothing more than an old wives’ tale and Push Push is not worried at all. She is simply a gentle giant who sometimes can be a bit awkward. And it surely hurts when she steps on your toes, accidentally or not!

Mouse was really looking forward to catching up with her consultant Millie this morning. Over the past few weeks they had formed a really good working relationship. The Super Dede Competition has finally finished and now their head is free to make plans for the next exciting venture. Mouse likes to get her teeth into a new challenge. It was a big surprise when she found the path blocked by a chain and a large “No Dedes” sign on the wall. On the other side of the obstacle a few fluffy toys had gathered. Mouse didn’t know any of them, but they looked a little hostile. Millie was not only the only familiar face  but also the friendliest.  “Sorry, I can’t talk to you anymore” she called from across the chain. “The fluffy toys had a referendum, a Flexit, and they voted to be independent.” Mouse was stunned, that was the first she heard about it. “But,” Mouse pointed out, “without us you are nothing. Our readers only know of you because of us.” Millie looked sad. “I have to go with the majority.”

One of our Instagram followers @wizened_gnome confessed in a comment yesterday, that she would love to ask a question, but she doesn’t know the Dedes well enough yet. The Dedes were surprised and told her, that they are only puppets and they don’t take anything personally. They haven’t invented the word puppetally yet! Anyway wizened_gnome said the Dedes seem to be pretty thick skinned. This promped Mouse to ask a question this morning. “Now this is an easy one” she said “the Dedes are thick skinned – True or false?” Snippedy laughed out loud and said “It’s not easy at all.” Then he explained, that the Dedes like to look at everything from all angles and they always endeavour to see both sides of the coin. But they often run into trouble, because disagreement is frequently interpreted as dislike. They know very well, that disagreement is on issues and dislike is personal. While the Dedes like to challenge beliefs and feel comfy in the position of Devil’s Advocate, they still want to walk away as friends.  If this doesn’t work, they might just walk away and focus on something else.

When Mr Vague realised how hard the Dedes had tried to warn the little Walrus about Top Dog he became very worried. While he is at pains to not draw any attention to himself, he is well aware he has done some pretty dumb things at times. He thought the Dedes might now gossip about him behind his back. Bad Conscience is always on the lookout for a tormented soul to latch onto so immediately jumped at the opportunity to grab Mr Vague. Once Bad Conscience has you in his vice like grip he likes to move in with you. While he doesn’t need much space and doesn’t say much, he has a big problem with reflux and regurgitates a lot. The room fills quickly with an air of sour grapes. A truly unpleasant smell. Devil spotted what was going on and came to Mr Vague’s rescue.

Do you know the feeling when you have so many things you want to do, but you don’t know where to start or what to do first, so you run around doing a little bit here and a little bit there, but you don’t finish anything? This is my life! I am not getting anywhere in a hurry but the sand is steadily running through the hourglass.

At least I am keeping up with my Instagram images. The month of love (February) is finally over and we are now into March. Life in the Dede world goes on. Here again is a quick summary about what has happened lately. Top Dog, the narcissist, is back on the scene and currently wooing the lil’Dede Walrus. Though Walrus dresses carefully she is not a particularly good looking lil’Dede, so she is an easy target for Top Dog‘s silver-tongued words. Of course she fell for it. Nitpicker tried to warn the little walrus not to get too close but being a nitpicker she didn’t believe him. It looks like he was unsuccessful in preventing the lovelorn walrus from making a big mistake. Today she happily announced she is convinced she has found her soul mate.

Lou waiting

The Dedes are currently discussing love. I am sure, we all agree, love is the most wonderful thing that can happen to someone. However, when there is an imbalance in affection it can also become scary. Lou, the young puppy, is infatuated with Skeleton Edeltraut. Who can blame him? Any young puppy will fall in love with a pile of bones. Whenever she shows up, he gets all excited, jumps up and down, tries to lick her and basically follows her around sniffing and worshipping the ground she walks on. Skeleton Edeltraut is outright scared, but no-one offers support. Everyone believes she should be able to cope with it. After all, she is in the scaring business herself. When she comes out of her closet, a lot of people are very frightened. It doesn’t help that she is generally a bit distant and cold and not as cute as Lou. No one takes her cry for help seriously. They put Lou’s behaviour down to his nature and advise her to harden up. Mhm. That is such a classic dede conundrum. How can this be resolved?

This week is Ask Us Anything (AUA) week.

Jessie Martinovic asked what the strangest request was so far for the Dedes. I didn’t have to think hard, but I have to go back a long way. It was definitely when Arindam asked the Dedes to do a dharna, indian style. So what happened then?

I had discovered the blog of German artist Jürgen Küster who writes together with his alter ego art figure Buchalov. Unlike the Dedes, Buchalov is very supportive of his artist and acts like a mentor. The two have deep and meaningful conversations. I aired the wish I would love to have similar conversations with the Dedes, but they are not intellectual at all. Of course this blog post offended the Dedes big time. (There are four consecutive posts to the story). Bad Conscience got involved and it got a bit messy.

The next day, our reader Arindam said I should apologise to the Dedes and if not, they should do a Dharna. Neither I nor the Dedes knew then what this was, but the Dedes looked it up on the internet and figured out a Dharna is a way to show the world that somebody had treated them in an unjust way. It involved sitting on the offender’s doorsteps until they get justice or die.

Thankfully, it didn’t come to the latter. Witch and I negotiated the end of the dharna, as it started to drizzle (The Dedes can’t stand rain). I certainly didn’t want my behaviour to cause the demise of the Dedes.

Thanks Jessie for your question. It was fun reading the story again :)

Carly_Photography (114 of 134)

Remember the beautiful pictures my friend Carly took at the launch of the Artist’s Survival Cookbook? I promised then I would write a special post about her as I truly admire her work and her as a person. Today is the day when I finally honour that promise. It has taken this long as Carly was working on her new website Fossick and Forage, which she finally launched last night. I’m sure you’ll agree with me that she is an excellent photographer and food stylist. She is also an amazing person, full of life and craving for new experience. I was impressed with how she magically transformed a run-down old church hall into a warm and welcoming place for my launch. And I was even more excited when I saw that the first  Story on her webpage is dedicated to the launch of my book. Comparing the photographs each of us has chosen for our sites illustrates brilliantly how you can tell a story simply by selecting the imagery. While I was looking for the people shots that conveyed the vibe of the day, Carly focused on the mood of the bygone era. (And no, I am not the lady she has selected as her poster girl for the story :). It’s also interesting to find out what others say about you. Thank you so much, Carly!

guilty Lil-dedes2

Bobby the policeman is always in uniform. He even sleeps in it so it wasn’t stolen along with the other ones. It’s lucky he does because he still has a body! The Dedes asked him to investigate to find out what happened to their robes. Bobby rounded up some of the Lil’Dedes and started questioning them. They were quite incensed. With the assertiveness only a short puppet can have, one of them stepped forward, looked Bobby firmly in the eye and said, “just because we’re little doesn’t mean we’re guilty!” Look at their clothes. Honestly, they are much more elaborate than the black robes the Dedes always wear. What was he thinking?
