exhibition2

I am back to normal! At least that is what I think :).

Unfortunately I have to own up to something. I actually don’t have any images from opening of the exhibition itself. I took a few pics when we finished setting up and a couple just before the guests arrived. This time I couldn’t afford to employ someone to photograph during the event like I did when I had the book launch. I noticed the gallery people were taking photographs though. I will ask if they can give me one to publish on the blog. Otherwise I will take some next Sunday when I will be at the Gallery all day and I am expecting a little crowd.

The image today shows quite nicely how the set up works. The puppets are placed on plinths in the middle of the room and as artworks they are back to their “No Body” status. The heads sit idly on their custom-made stands.

The images on the wall are from the blog and the text accompanying the image is placed below. I focussed on shorter pieces that tell a complete story so the visitors don’t have to read too much if they don’t feel like it. But by reading even just a few snippets they still get the idea of the puppet world. If you have followed the blog for a while you can make out the image where Sunny copied the artwork of ArtistatExit0, and by doing so created our mascot Lil’ Sculpture. Next to it is the image of the puppets doing a dharna on my doorstep. In all the pictures the puppets wear their robes and really come to life.

I have had a lot of very good comments about the presentation of the blog and my vivid imagination. I am not sure if the latter is a good thing, but I’ll take it as a compliment for now.

The image below shows two of my life-savers racing around setting up drinks and nibbles just before the guests arrived. It illustrates the size of the puppet heads. One comment I get quite often is that people assume the heads are bigger. But they are glove puppets after all. Most of them are between 12 and 15 cm high.

I also updated my Characters page today. I had to take mug shots of all the new puppets for the exhibition anyway. But as you might know, I don’t want to get to close to the newbies. I abstained from writing their short description, even though some of them are really pushy and want to tell me their stories :)

set up

Phew, the exhibition is finally underway. But what a nightmare it was to get there… I have to apologise for neglecting the blog for a little while. I honestly wanted to get back into writing daily in the build-up to the opening, but somehow it didn’t pan out like this. I won’t go into detail about the last week, that we had a visitor staying with us while our house didn’t have all the walls, or kitchen, and only one sink, or about the cold nights without insulation. The last 24 hours before The Opening were enough to make a puppet cry… if it still had the energy.

Friday we set the space up. What we thought would take us 3 hours took eight! Ah well, it is an acceptable misjudgement when it is your first exhibition. It was far more important that I had enough material to hang on the walls. I printed pictures and stories from the blog and they look really great on the wall. It’s a pity that the last thing I saw on Friday night was a glaring spelling mistake in the headline of the very first print-out the visitors will see. So it was a trip back to the office that night to make a new print-out and also to write an artist’s statement that I had totally forgotten about.

At least when I went to bed on Friday night I was sure everything was ready to go and there were only few minor things to do the next day before the guests would arrive for the opening.

I am a fortunate person. I only have migraines once every two years. Unfortunately, when I woke up on Saturday morning it was that day! My first thought was I can’t have one today so I popped a head-ache pill, totally forgetting that they don’t really agree with my stomach. Sure enough, it didn’t take long before I started throwing up. Hubby remarked jokingly that the pills were certainly 5 years past the best before date. I checked, and yes, the expiry date was March 08. It didn’t occur to  me to check at the time. They looked like the things I needed then and there.

But back to the story. A few hours of rest before the opening should have sorted me out, but the builders had asked us if they could put the gib board up on Saturday. Of course, as we want the house finished soon, we were happy for them to come in. How could I have known that I would have a migraine? So there wasn’t much reprieve with all the sawing and drilling and hammering going on in the other rooms of the house.

When we were finally ready to leave, we hopped in the car only to find the windscreen had cracked. And not just a tiny little crack but a huge, spiderweb crack right across the driver’s side. Something had hit it. All the wine for the opening was in the car and had to make it’s way to the Gallery. I tried to ring a friend to ask if she could pick me up. But both of my trusted friends who live close by were out and of course I had left my mobile phone at the office the night before, so I couldn’t ring them on theirs. I simply didn’t have their numbers.

Finally I got hold of one of them and yes, she would pick us up at 1pm. Thank goodness we stayed late the night before to finish everything. Otherwise I would have panicked by now but I felt far too seedy.

One o’clock came and went. No trusted friend in sight. Twenty past one and I was starting to get a bit nervous as said friend is usually very reliable. So I went to check the phone. Would you believe it? It was off the hook. So I rang my friend again. She was still at home and couldn’t find her car keys!

We made it in the end, and we made it before the guests arrived!

Ask me how it went. I can’t tell you. When it was all over, I went into the kitchen to thank my helpers and said “What a fizzer, eh!” All three of them looked at me as if I was at a different party. They thought it went very well.

I am pretty sure it was the Dedes. They tried to sabotage The Opening as they don’t want to be sold!

tap

I am really missing my easel at the moment. All my paints are stored away while we are renovating. In the meantime I try to capture painterly moments with my camera.

This here is an extreme close-up of an old-fashioned tap I have in the laundry. It goes with a  concrete basin and I call it my ‘cow trough.’  Two cows could easily drink from it side by side. I guess it has been in the house since it was build in the mid-sixties of the last century and it is so easy to imagine, how the previous owner  (who built the place) was sweating over the trough on wash-day. I am very hesitant to replace it, even though it is very clunky and has a lot of dings and dents. It is just perfect for cleaning brushes!

accelerated standstill

This is one of my favorite photographs. I captured it entirely unintentional, as I accidentally pushed the release button, before I had finished changing the settings on my camera. But I love the result for its colours and painterly properties. In my opinion it looks very haptic. I want to touch the surface, only to be disappointed. As it is a photograph it has of course a completely smooth surface.

In reality it is a close-up of a steam train at dusk taken with an extremely slow shutter speed. I called this image “Accelerated Standstill.” Finding one’s intrinsic speed is a recurring topic in my work.

rose2

A rose is the ultimate token of love, isn’t it? This tatty old plastic rose is a painful reminder of my youth. I personally can’t understand why people want to be young again. All the pain you go through in your teenage years. The longing for acceptance and respect. You want to be different and stand out, but at the same time you want to fit in and be exactly like everybody else. What a dilemma. No way would I want to go through that again.

I don’t know exactly how I obtained this rose. I can’t remember whether I bullied the person into handing it over to me or not. My memory about this has faded, but the pain I feel when I look at it suggests that it was not given to me voluntarily. I know who I got it from and I remember the situation. It was at one of those travelling fairgrounds with a shooting booth. Teenage crowd, typical situation: girl loves boy, boy loves another girl,  the other girl couldn’t care less and second boy loves first girl, all without anybody really knowing what love actually means. Everything happens in secret, well hidden, or so they think, convinced that nobody except themselves knows, despite it being so blatantly obvious.

As you grow older you watch the next generation repeating the pattern. And just like we were, they are convinced nobody will notice. What can the old folks possibly know about the pain of searching for true love. Weren’t they born old?

What is most surprising though, is that for some people it never seems to end. Watch people in the rest home… It goes on, the craving for respect and acceptance and the search for this one special person.

devil and fairy

The other day, when I was taking the images for the “Embrace Diversity” series, all the Dedes were on their best behaviour. The idea was to photograph puppets that wouldn’t normally go together, like Rob the thief and Bobby the policeman. Surprisingly, when they forgot about their professions, they are actually not that different at all and they shared a good old yarn over a beer. Foxy Lady – who tangoed with Harvey, the rabbit – told me afterwards how much she enjoyed the dancing. She admitted she was brought up hating rabbits. That was just the way it was at home and she never questioned it. Not in her wildest dreams would she have thought Harvey could be so much fun.

I got six images I am really happy with and they are already on the tshirts now. The only pairing that didn’t work for me was Mrs Esta Blished, the fairy godmother, and Devil. These two where whispering to each other all afternoon. When I looked at the pictures later I wasn’t quite sure what was going on. When the image is cropped to their heads only they look okay. It just looks like Devil is letting Mrs Esta Blished in on a secret. But when you see the entire image, it looks more like he is hassling her. I better watch this. Despite being a devil, I  have never had any complaints about him so far. But then, it could as well mean that nobody dares to speak up. Until I know the whole story  I can’t really use this image.

On Friday I finished the pictures for the “Embrace Diversity” series and uploaded them, so I could finish the t-shirt series over the weekend. I have six different images, but then I realised I had forgotten the words dede puppets on the image. How could I? The originals are of course at work, so I won’t be able to continue until Monday.

While I was working on the images I thought they might be suitable for my exhibition in June, without the caption though. I have to start working a bit smarter and not reinvent the wheel every time I start a new thing. I feel just so much more comfortable creating than promoting. The Dedes have a valid point when they tell me I am hindering their growth.

I came across a problem with my zazzle store. When I look at it, the prices are in New Zealand Dollars as the domain is zazzle.co.nz. I don’t know what happens when a person from America clicks on the link at the bottom of my blog. Is the website intelligent enough to realise it should link to the zazzle.com domain? Or do Americans see New Zealand prices as well? If that is the case, I would think they will fall flat on their backs and I will never make a sale over there. Can somebody enlighten me how this works? I would appreciate this a lot.

I am finally ready to tell the story of Fairy Godmother. It is a long story and I have to briefly recap the whole Dede story.

You might know the Dedes have been around for just over a year. I started doing them in December 2011 and they immediately took on a life of their own. Within a week I had created 15 characters. They instantly set forth and forced me to drop everything else I was doing at the time and take pictures of them. When the images turned out well, they went on to demand a story about our relationship. So I sat down and wrote the book “Hermit’s Web or the few friends I need I hand-craft myself”. Their initial success made them so vain that having the book distributed to my close friends wasn’t good enough for them any longer. They wanted to take on the world…

Unfortunately they can’t do it themselves. They have to work with me. And I am the one who is holding it all up, so they tell me. If they had chosen a different artist, if they had landed in someone else’s studio, they would be out there enjoying fame and fortune (or at least, that is what they are constantly telling me). I can assure you they are not always plain fun. They are needy, demanding and ungrateful at times. They are holding me hostage  – but that is a different story. I wanted to let you in on the appearance of Fairy Godmother.

The Dedes, – when the book was published – heard or read somewhere that New Zealand was Guest of Honor at the tremendously important book fair in Frankfurt. Of course their demands didn’t stop with the publication of the book. The next thing was they wanted to go to this big fair. My plea that we were a little late didn’t cut it with them. “That is what we want, make it happen.” they said.

I was extremely fortunate to find someone who still had space on their booth and was willing to take the Dede book to Frankfurt after I had described it as an art book over the phone. I was so overjoyed about the good news that I immediately had to sit down and create the Fairy Godmother for good luck. The head wasn’t even dry when the lady, an academic, rang me back to tell me that my book wasn’t an art book. She said the book was rather childish. Whimsical I prefer to call it, but the word eluded me at the time. I was speechless. Here we are again: what is art?

Anyway, the book went to Frankfurt in the end. When I put the skin on the Dede Fairy Godmother I named her Mrs Esta Blished. Look at her. She turned out to be a tired old Fairy Godmother, who is busy protecting her own achievements. Her wand  is gathering dust in the attic. Personally I think she is a beauty, but she might not appeal to other people. Just like art, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I have been working hard on finishing a design for the puppet’s Zazzle store. So far I have created a series of six mugs depicting individual puppets. The “Embrace Diversity” series needs to germinate a little longer. Last night I showed the design of the mug to the puppets for sign-off, but they were all very quiet. Devil, the spokesperson, shed light on the situation. He said some of them had aired their concern, saying a Zazzle store devalues their standing as artworks and they are currently discussing the pros and cons amongst themselves. So they would like to postpone the first products for a little bit. This burst my bubble and I know when we slow down now it will never happen. Just like the Procrastinator puppet who is supposed to have been created with the first lot.

Of course most of the puppets agree they have to contribute to the household kitty. Only a few believe the whole thing is silly and play the artwork card. They are artworks for art sake! Unfortunately, as is most often the case, the few that disagree are the most vocal ones.

I asked them what they came up with in their one week of retreat and they looked sheepishly to one side. So I guess there was nothing workable.

“It is always so easy to be against things,” I said very frustrated, “but coming up with a constructive idea is a totally different story.”

I took my proofsheet and a pen and asked all the puppets depicted on the mugs to sign a model-release form. So it is all water-tight and I will put their mugs up today.

studio

With what I am currently doing, an old riddle has surfaced again. What is the difference between graphic design and art? Is there a difference or is a graphic designer an artist?

A few years back I had a crucial experience when  I met a gallerist at a work function. She asked me what I do for a living and when I answered I am a graphic artist, she snidely remarked that would be a misnomer. All graphic designers are nothing more than would-be artists. She made a clear distinction between an artist and a designer and it was very obvious she didn’t hold the latter in high esteem.

I thought about this remark for a long time and after a lot of soul searching I figured out that for me personally the main distinction is the client. As a graphic designer I am commissioned to be creative within the framework of the wishes and financials of the client. It requires a lot of tact, but ultimately the client has the final say. To stay true to my soul  I have the option of choosing the clients I want to work for. My ones are mainly not-for-profit and small businesses who just set out. Along my career there were plenty of examples where I was happy I didn’t have to sign my name to the finished work (there are plenty of examples I am proud of too :).  You basically have to keep the customer happy and in the end he puts the bread on your table. If you are lucky you even have wine to go with it.

As an artist I am free. I can create whatever I feel like. No explanation needed. The only limitations are my skills and my ideas. I like to challenge both. Ultimately that is the reason I am an artist. Unfortunately if you want to survive on your art you have to convince others that you are the best otherwise you face starvation. There are so many truly gifted people out there and in the end the one who shouts the loudest will make it. This brings on a totally new set of problems. But one thing is for sure, independent you are not! So far, I have been fortunate enough that I could support my art habit with my other work.

But it is all becoming a bit blurry lately and I seriously have to re-think my double-tracked approach I lived comfortably with for such a long time. This is currently my biggest challenge. Any ideas?
