When Foxy Lady got up she realised the figures were only dwarfs. “Are you good or evil” she asked the one that looked like the eldest.

“If you believe in us, we are good” said the stone man “and if you don’t believe, we use our discretion.”

Foxy had so many more questions and continued. “What are you doing here?” she asked.

“We are curing here for a month.”

“And then?”

“We will find a new home.”

“Can I come with you?”

“Hold your horses lady, we don’t even know you. Are you good or evil?” the elder replied.

“Of course I am good!” said Foxy Lady indignantly.

“No, you are not!” called Benevolent King who finally caught up, “you tried to push Top Dog of the shelf.”

“And you reckon that was a good deed, do you?” the stone man wanted to know.

After Foxy Lady was positively identified amongst the Lil’Dedes at the computer, she realised, it was time to move on again. Unfortunately, the Dedes don’t have much stamina and she soon collapsed exhausted in the wet area of the studio. The Dedes are not water tight and so she was sure, nobody would come looking for her here. Unfortunately, when she opened her eyes this morning she realised she was lying at the feet of the stone men, the artist’s latest creations. Some grim looking characters, oh oh.

Can you believe it? Look at the snout on the right hand side. Does this look familiar? What’s happening?
There has been tremendous activity in the Lil’Dede household lately. The smaller finger puppet cousins of the Dedes set up shop on a website for New Zealand crafted goods. They have been tossing up between etsy and felt.co.nz and in the end the went for local. Anyone in the world can buy here though. And look who is helping them! If I get my hands on this Lady she will have to answer a few questions. In the meantime… the shop is called beyond_dedes.felt.co.nz

There is no inspiration without Groucho…. Today Liar showed us his favourite quote, which was sent to the Dedes by  @renfieldwantsmore  “Who is that Groucho Marx guy” called Top Dog from behind the curtains “he copied that one straight out of my book! I will sue him.”

IMG_2002

Then Top Dog came out of his hiding place and walked straight up to Liar.  “You and I are definitely cut from the same cloth,” he said, “do you want to be my campaign manager?”

This didn’t go down well with a few instagram readers. Sorry guys, it is out of my hands. The two seem to be the dream team.

I am not sure if I get round to updating you tomorrow as I have a full-day gig making puppets from trash at the Auckland Storylines Family day. The puppet making is themed healthy eating. Munch and Kin will be the baddies that need to be fought off.

I was busy all week sifting through surplus and left-over material and whittled it down to two boxes full of rubbish to take. This is a job that takes ages, as I easily get sidetracked with making things myself. I also had to remove oodles of rusty pins, so the kids don’t injure themselves when they comb through the treasures. I love these workshops. I find it amazing to see the kids being totally engrossed for an hour or so and come up with their gorgeous creations. I hope I will get some good pics, but I might be too busy running around with my glue gun, helping to stick everything together.

Here is one puppet I prepared earlier, to give the kids an idea what to do. Not that they need it, but had fun making it.

Now that Pinkpok is already old news, the Dedes continue with their inspirational quotes. Calamity showed the one she tries hard to live by. But she is adamant in her picture the shadows definitely outweigh the highlights. According to her, she can’t do anything about it no matter how hard she tries.

“Who cares about inspirational quotes anyway” said Munch to Kin, “all I care for is junk food.” These two special characters came out of the closet for the weekend. I made them a while back to promote my friend’s book about good nutrition. And this Sunday they will have an exciting outing. They will attend Storylines Auckland Familydays, where we will be making puppets from junk.

Today is a big day for the new Dede @moss.creek and I have developed together. Moss.Creek, whose real name is Sheila, had won a referral competition. Her prize was that an image of her was turned into a puppet. In the little film, the puppet was preparing to meet the rest of the crew for the first time with her skin on. As you certainly all know, it is not easy to be the new kid on the block. Nervously, she has been practising her maiden speech all morning. The text was written by Sheila and it was the foundation from which the puppet was developed. It was a novelty for me to create a puppet in a long distance collaboration. However, Tony from xraypics, will certainly recognise the approach to the new puppet’s maiden speech. I used a tts program, as I personally have a very strong German accent, that would have set the wrong tone for the puppet :). I first used a tts with the puppets when we did a Dada Jill and Jack film, for which Tony kindly provided the text.

When Pinkpok (as the puppet was christened by Sheila)  finally met all the other Dedes, she had forgotten the words she practised so conscientiously and she had to wing it. This is what she said in the end: “Darkness and the discomforts of reality will always be the most important things to face. Within this darkness we will find the true nature of how things are and find the strength to let our light shine forth.” What wise words. Ah well she is an owl. Thanks @moss.creek for the great words of wisdom. It was really fun to create Pinkpok by email! Personally I think she is rather cute, but very difficult to photograph. We hardly know her, but we already love her. Pity that she will have to leave soon. I offered Sheila jokingly she could have Top Dog and I would keep Pinkpok. But no, her response was Top Tog could go into a dog pound. She has big plans for Pinkpok and even is working on a dress for her already. And she promised, we will get letters from time to time.

“Can’t we just ignore that Top Dog guy and have some fun?” said Alien to Devil and Mouse, who both look very bewildered at the moment. Alien believes a good laugh can heal all wounds, and the situation definitely needs to be defused somehow. But is ignoring the right solution?

IMG_1958

Devil and Mouse retreated to a corner to have a quiet discussion about Alien’s suggestion. They do not want to ignore the clear and present danger and are concerned that everything seems to be becoming too sombre. Yes, they agree, the situation needs to be defused, though neither Devil nor Mouse feel much like laughing at the moment. They feel their hard work has been devalued through Top Dog’s actions, but they must battle on to hold it all together.

“Do you know,” said Mouse to Devil, “I really could do with some inspirational quotes.”

Does anyone have one for Mouse?

First things first, the new puppet has a name: Norman T Newbie III. Sounds like old money, doesn’t it?

Thank you so much to our instagram followers @trulyrealro and @angelcorpuschristi and blog reader Jessie.

The Dedes are a bit wary of the new one after his gaffe with the gun, but they try to stay open minded and will watch him for a while.

Well, while they were watching, Top Dog jumped into action and slidled up to the youngster.

IMG_1786

“I could use a young lad just like you” he said to Norman T Newbie III and put his arm around his shoulder, “You could be in charge of security at my rallies.”

The young one was flattered but didn’t want to look too keen. “I am not completely finished yet” he said half-heartedly. “Don’t worry, I’ll look after you. I know what you need and I will give you exactly that” replied Top Dog and offered his hand to seal the deal before Norman T Newbie III could think of another excuse.

Should we be concerned? This morning Bossman showed up and screamed “Don’t give me this ‘Embrace Diversity’ crap” There was no need to shout, as everyone else was quiet anyway. But he continued to bluster “Our times call for a strong leader. I vote for Top Dog.”

Nobody took much notice, who believes a screamer anyway? The Dedes just quietly continued doing what they were doing so far, business as usual. But then the thin voice of Mr Vague became audible. “I don’t have anything to say” he uttered “I need someone you speaks loudly for me. Top Dog does that!”

IMG_1760

Devil wants to take part in the “Embrace Diversity” project as well. But he believes his counterpart should be an angel and he couldn’t find any amongst the Dedes. So he went to the artist (that would be me) to air his frustration. While he was with me, we heard a loud clunk on the table and he went to investigate. Watch the little film to find out what it is all about.

He discovered we just hit the little milestone of 500 followers on Instagram. You might know that Instagram followers are very fickle, they come and go very quickly. We can understand that, as there is so much to see. I myself have reached the maximal number I can follow and still engage with. Every so often I have to let someone go, so that I can engage with someone else. (Little hint, if you want to keep me as follower, make sure you don’t post too much on one day. The ones that chuck up 20 posts a day are the first ones I say good-bye to.)

Anyway the Dedes are interested in longterm relationships and we came up with a cunning little plan.  If you recommend the Dedes on Instagram to your friends you go into the draw of a Dede-You. That is a personalised Dede. The competition runs until the 6th of August 2016 and the winner is drawn on the 7th. If you have an Instagram account do have a look (and spread the word :)).

what puppet are you

This morning I quickly put together the contest ad and rules and posted in on Instagram. Sadly, something went terribly wrong and I am in trouble with the puppets again. The little film with Devil earlier today had fifty views and ten comments within the hour. The post about the competition had four. Oooppps. That is poor performance indeed, there is no denying! I tried to defend myself by telling the Dedes, that a third of our readership is actually living in America and they had just gone to bed. The Dedes didn’t accept that, they believe that the advertising was crap. Honestly, who wants to be a puppet. While many love to watch the antics of the Dedes, looking like a Dede is something else, isn’t it?

The Dedes very clearly view this exercise as an attempt to get a higher profile, while I view it as an artistic collaboration. Personally, I don’t have a problem expressing myself as a puppet, it is a well-know fact by now that Cash Cow has my eyes.  But I agree, we should have talked about it in more detail, before I jumped the gun.

We now settled that we will wait until tomorrow morning. If there is still poor participation, the Dedes will change the rules, as they so often do.
