Yes, the Dedes are still around! And we are getting somewhere. Still heaps to do, so I won’t write much today. Just a snapshot of the workspace tonight. The new ones are progressing nicely. So far I have completed eleven new characters for the exhibition, and there are still a few more in the making.
I am looking forward when it is all over and I can spend time reading other blogs again. At the moment I have the feeling I am totally disconnected from the world.
I could also view this as being “connected to the world”, but I understand what you mean. Can’t wait to see a “team photo” of the latest Dedes.
The last puppets I made last night are pretty scary, but I have fulfilled my quantum. Hurrah! I only have to coat them!
I’d tried to take a group photo but there are just too many and you can’t make out faces. I will have to take them in lots :)
Will you display them with bodies or as decapitated heads? I think I saw one of your photos with simple black and white bodies emphasising the individuality of the heads, which is good. I take it these are glove puppets. Have you considered marionettes? I have always been fascinated by the articulation and the ingenuity of their mechanisms, how the strings work, etc. You could have great fun in that space in the future,- an opportunity to allow your creative skill to extend to the mechanical aspects of your art. I hope you will do the right thing by your little people and bring them to life in performance. Cheers,Tony
Yes, there are glove puppets. They are conceived as heads only and when they are presented they are sitting motionless on their stands. However, during the exhibition I have two puppeteering workshop called “Lend us a hand” and then they come to life with their black robes.
I love marionettes too and have been thinking about making one for years. But at the moment I like the dedes for their simplicity…
